SUM Insurance Coverage in New York
Can I get more protection if I am in a car crash?
One of the most important ways to protect yourself is to have adequate insurance. A large percentage of drivers carry the minimum policy of $25,000 increasing the odds that you will have a collision with one of those underinsured drivers. While $25,000 sounds like a reasonable amount of money, the reality is that $25,000 can be spent in an instant if you are seriously injured and have lost time from work, medical and other associated expenses. To protect yourself you will need additional insurance to your current policy. This additional coverage is simply an add-on or rider to you current policy that will give you additional coverage called supplemental underinsured motorist or SUM. By purchasing this additional coverage, you will have extra insurance that will help you in the event of a catastrophic accident. In order to protect yourself, talk to your insurance agent to purchase supplemental under-insured/uninsured motorist coverage.
The way that SUM coverage works is that your policy will make up for the difference between the policy and your actual damages. For example, if you sustained $200,000 in damages and the other vehicle had $50,000 in coverage, if you had a $200,000 SUM policy, you would receive the additional $150,000 lost.
